Lot 393 | Saint Sebastian
Saint Sebastian, the Tyrol or Salzburg, about 1470/80
Height 78 cm
Stone, back hollowed. Later replaced by the remains of the original version. Right Hand missing, left Hand and arrows vohl added. Anstückung in the base area. Right facial area überschnitzt partially. Age damage., rest.
Provenance: Rhenish Private Collection. Purchased in the 1960s in Kitzbühel. In spite of the Tyrolean Region typical of the pine wood, the Sebastian's character has Similarities with Salzburg or from Salzburg-influenced sculptors. The almond-shaped eyes, the sides slightly pulled down, a long straight nose, narrow mouth and a relatively high cheeks under a narrow brow and rich Hair is not only found at Work (mostly Linden) wood in the Salzburg area, but also to the figures made of red Salzburg marble at the baptismal font of St. Stephan in Vienna, which could not be mapped to by old records of Ulrich Auer in Salzburg. Lit. Museum Augsteum Salzburg, late Gothic art, Salzburg, 1976; Karl Oetttinger, The Taufwerk of St. Stephan in Wien, Vienna, 1949, p. 45ff. and Fig.
