The first Deutschlandflug took place after the exposure of the Wehrmacht from 21 to 27 June 1937. It was the biggest aviation event at the time which was attended not only by 62 three-aircraft formations, but also by private pilots with their planes. The NSFK was established shortly before the Deutschlandflug by a Führer edict dated 17 April 1937 and succeeded the DLV under the presidency of Hermann Göring as paramilitary pilots' organisation. The NSFK was also controlled by Hermann Göring in his function as Reich Minister of Aviation. However, first corps leader with simultaneous appointment to Lieutenant General was Friedrich Christiansen (1879 - 1972), who was navy pilot during World War I with 21 confirmed aerial victories and the first reserve officer of the navy to receive the Pour le Mérite.
