A fine Bohemian or German wheellock sporting gun, circa 1680/1700
With lightly swamped, octagonal, sighted smooth-bore barrel. The lock finely engraved with the figure of Orpheus playing the harp, seated in an idyllic landscape below the walls of a city and amidst a gathering of game and exotic African beasts. The hammer pierced and engraved with a further figure costumed in antique style, with harp and turban, probably also Orpheus, and fitted with spring bridle pierced and engraved with a parrot in a bough, sliding pan cover, internal wheel, and the internal components also finely engraved. The highly figured stained burr-walnut full stock decorated over its rear half with silver piqué scrollwork, partly on contrasting inlaid shaped ebony plaques, these in turn additionally inlaid with a series of engraved silver plaques, comprising an ornate vacant escutcheon beneath the lock, a bird-of-prey opposite the lock, and a crowned escutcheon with lion supporters on the cheek piece, a pair of winged dragons beneath, sliding patch-box cover inlaid en suite and involving a small mask-in-splendour, ebony ramrod pipes and fore-end cap also inlaid with silver piqué scrollwork, iron trigger guard, gilt-brass butt plate, set trigger, and original ramrod with horn and silver piqué tip (the stock with several expert repairs). Barrel length 71 cm, overall length 97 cm. The inlaid treatment of the stock compares with the stock of a deluxe Zella wheellock rifle made for Friedrich, Elector of Saxony, dated 1684. Preserved in the Veste Coburg (inv. no.: IV.E.193). Cf. Geibig, Alfred, "Gefährlich und Schön", Coburg 1996, cat. no. 67, p. 161 ff.
