Further details
An indefatigable caricaturist of his contemporaries, Daumier was a key artist of the 19th century, influential far beyond the press for which he worked. The author of a considerable body of graphic and lithographic work, he also produced a body of paintings. The present sheet is faithful to the artist's preferred style and subjects. His attention to popular figures is expressed here with empathetic irony, in a drawing of characteristic vivacity. While the high eyebrows, round eyes and concentrically undulating lines are Daumier's hallmarks, the artist's debt to Rembrandt is clear: not only do the brown washes, the wisps of smoke and the theatrical chiaroscuro mark a reference to the master, but the very subject of the smoker evokes an iconography dear to the Dutch Golden Age. This drawing is almost identical to a larger composition of three men around a fire entitled Chasseurs se chauffant, in which one of the protagonists lights his pipe, creating a cloud of smoke, like the present drawing (private collection; K.E. Maison, Catalogue raisonné of the paintings, watercolours and drawings, Paris, 1968, no. 322).
