Butterflies in their Floral homes with Butterfly Fables indited by a Dreamer in the woods. London: Paul Jerrard, [1858].

Rare and beautiful suite of plates finished in contemporary hand-colour and lithographed throughout. The work was published in Paul Gerard's series 'Cream and Gold Presents appropriate for marriage, birthday and festive occasions for all seasons'. Advertised as a high-end gift for the Victorian era, this charming work depicts 9 species of butterfly surrounded by flora and fauna and each image is accompanied by a poetic verse. Auction records list only one other copy coming to sale in the last 10 years (RBH). Nissen attributes the illustrations to British naturalist and entomologist Henry Noel Humphreys. Quarto (271 x 184mm). Hand-coloured title, dedication leaf and 9 plates, text in pink, titles and borders in gilt, one leaf of publisher’s ads at end, lithographed throughout (minor offsetting). Publisher’s cloth backed lacquered mottled boards, upper cover with central pictorial design and title in gilt, enclosed within gilt floral border, lithographed floral endpapers, gilt edges (hinge starting to split, minorly affecting title, dedication and first plate, corners lightly bumped).
