This is a study for the figure of Saint Justine of Padua in an altarpiece that Palma il Giovane painted for the church of the Cappuccine in San Gerolamo in Venice. The painting, depicting Saint Carlo Borromeo and Saint Justine at the feet of the Cross, is now in the Seminario Patriarcale, but it was described in detail by Marco Boschini in the 17th Century in its original location (S. Mason Ronaldi, Palma il Giovane. L’opera completa, Milan, 1987, no. 590, ill.).
