Further details
JEAN-BAPTISTE OUDRY, SAINT FELIX (?) IN A FOREST, PEN AND BROWN INK, BROWN WASH, HEIGHTENED WITH WHITE, BROWN WASH FRAMING LINES, ON BLUE PAPER
This drawing belongs to a series of saints made by Oudry around 1714 (L.-A. Prat, Le Dessin français au XVIIIe siècle, Paris, 2011, pp. 355-356). Each drawing represents a scene from the life of one saint, and all are executed on blue paper, framed by a drawn line, and numbered at top. The numbers indicate the day of the month in which the saint represented was celebrated; together, the drawings were probably conceived by Oudry as a sort of calendar or almanac. Drawings from the series were dispersed in two subsequent auctions in Paris: a first group of seventeen sheets, including the present one, were offered for sale in 1984 (Hôtel Drouot, Paris, 5 December 1984, lot 113), and a second group of 45 drawings was offered two years later (Hôtel Drouot, Paris, 16 December 1986, lot 4), as part of an album that was acquired by the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. RF 41314-RF 41356). The present drawing, numbered 14, and probably represents Saint Felix, who is celebrated on 14 January. A page of the album in the Louvre (inv. RF 41315.A recto) describes the saint: ‘Saint Felix, a priest, was hidden in an old hut during six months during which time angels came to console him’. However, the corresponding drawing is missing from the album at the Louvre, and could therefore be the work under discussion.
