Further details
GIOVANNI BATTISTA TIEPOLO, A STANDING MAN WEARING A COAT, TURNED TO THE LEFT, BLACK CHALK, PEN AND BROWN INK, BROWN WASH
Giovanni Battista Tiepolo produced a large number of caricature drawings representing figures, often seen from the side or behind, to which this drawing may belong. The largest group of such drawings was bound in an album which contained 106 sheets in the collection of Arthur Kay in Edinburgh. The album, dispersed at auction in 1943 (Christie’s, London, 9 April 1943, lot 243-250), was entitled Tomo terzo di caricature, indicating that at least two other albums of caricatures had existed. They can possibly be identified with two large volumes containing humoristic drawings by the elder Tiepolo, listed in the 1854 catalogue of the Algarotti-Corniani (M. Levey, ‘Two Footnotes to any Tiepolo Monograph’, The Burlington Magazine, CIV, 1962, p. 119).
