JEAN-FRÉDÉRIC SCHALL (1752-1825), LOUIS XIV MAKES HIS FIRST DECLARATION OF LOVE TO MADEMOISELLE DE LA VALLIÈRE; MADEMOISELLE DE LA VALLIÈRE AND LOUIS XIV BENEATH A LEAFY CANOPY IN THE BOIS DE VINCENNES, OIL ON CANVAS, A PAIR
These two charming paintings belong to a set of six designed to be engraved to illustrate the novel L'Histoire de Mademoiselle de la Vallièreby by Caroline-Stéphanie-Félicité de Genlis (1746-1830). Published by Prud'hon fils in 1804, the adventures of Louise de La Vallière (1644-1710), remembered in history as one of the mistresses of King Louis XIV (1638-1715) in the 1660s - and as having returned to a convent after being abandoned by the Sun King - provided the perfect subject for the moralising taste of the First Empire.
In fact, it was to cope with this new moralistic era that the painter Jean-Frédéric Schall (1752-1825), who was highly regarded under the Ancien Régime for his gallant subjects and his dancers, had to adapt his style by turning to subjects inspired by national history, drawing among other things on the historical anecdotes of the French royal dynasties. And it worked! The Favre-Petitpierre et Cie factory, which operated in Nantes between 1802 and 1818, even used the motifs engraved by Louis-Charles Ruotte (1754-1806) after Schall to produce a Nantes canvas illustrating the story of the unhappy mistress (Fig. 1, Art Institute of Chicago, inv. 1952.650).
It should be noted that when these paintings last appeared on the market in 2002 (see above), they were presented in the same lot with a third work from the painted ensemble, Mademoiselle de la Vallière au couvent de Chaillot. Finally, a fourth painting, Mademoiselle de la Vallière et le Marquis de Bragelonne, was sold at Sotheby's Billingshurst on 17 May 1997 (lot 1074).
