"Recueil des Tentes Chinoises"
Inscribed with place name Paris and dated 1770 on the title page. Etching on handmade paper. Plate sizes: each approx. 24 x 16.5 cm. Mounted behind passe-partout on the upper edge (passe-partout 46.5 x 33.5 cm each). Slightly stained, slightly browned.

Mit dieser (leider nicht vollständig erhaltenen) Serie bedient Pillement ein Interesse der damaligen Zeit: China. Seit es Handelsbeziehungen zwischen dem fernen Osten und Europa gab, wurde China idealisiert und in den Schlössern und wohlbetuchten Bürgerhäusern ahmte man eine Vorstellung des Lebens in China nach. Diese "Chinamode", auch Chinoiserie genannt, wurde auch im Rokoko aufgegriffen.

Jean Pillement verbindet diese Vorstellung Chinas mit der Ornamentik des Rokokos. In der hier angebotenen Stichserie werden mithilfe von Rocailles-anmutenden C- und S- Kurven Landschaften entwickelt, die auf Vorstellungen von chinesischer Kultur aufbauen. Spannenderweise entwickelt sich der Eindruck der Rocaille jedoch nicht aus einem Element, sondern aus verschiedenen, wie etwa einer Brücke im Zusammenspiel mit Bäumen und Dachkonstruktionen, also allesamt realen Gegenständen, die hauptsächlich vertikal aufeinander aufbauen.

Pillement ist ein Meister seiner Zeit, auch wenn seine Werke erst sehr spät im Rokoko entstanden sind, finden sie weite Verbreitung in der Chinoiserie des späten 18. Jahrhunderts. Seine Drucke waren sehr beliebt, besonders in der Dekorativen Kunst bei englischen und französischen Künstlern, immer wieder finden sich seine Vorlagen in Gemälden, in der Porzellanmalerei oder bei Wandgestaltungen. Wenige andere Künstler haben Einfluss auf die Sicht Chinas in Europa der Zeit genommen wie er.
