Further details
Born to an artistic and literary family, Jeanne Gonzalès was the daughter of Emmanuel Gonzalès, a well-known writer and friend of Zola, and her mother was a musician. Eva Gonzalès, Jeanne's older sister, was both a model to and pupil of Édouard Mane, as well as becoming a painter in her own right. It is thought that Jeanne Gonzalès often chaperoned her sister to Manet's studio where Eva went for painting lessons : these sessions may have influenced her choice to become a painter.
