Autograph quotation, the opening four bars of the Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77, signed ('Zu frdl. Erinnerung / J. Brahms'), Vienna, 27 April 1884
The opening theme of Brahms's great violin concerto.

On a leaf in the autograph album of the violinist Mathias Vallent, altogether containing approx. 81 quotations, signatures or drawings, chiefly at Budapest, 1881-1926, the majority in German or Hungarian, tipped in or written directly on the leaves of the album, 131 x 215mm. Original brown leather binding, gilt edges.

The album also includes contributions by Eugène Ysaÿe (quotation from his violin concerto, 1902), Richard Strauss (signature), Joseph Joachim (signature), conductor Arthur Nikisch (six-bar quotation for voice and piano, 1887), the music critic Eduard Hanslick, the cello virtuoso David Popper (quotation from his 3rd cello concerto), Wilhelm Kienzl (quotation from his opera Urvasi), pianist Emil Sauer, Carl Reinecke, Pablo de Sarasate and other composers, performers, critics etc.

Vallent was a Hungarian violin virtuoso. A list of the contributions is available on request.
