Autograph letter signed ('J. Br.') to [Ernst Frank], [Pörtschach, late June 1878]
In German. Two pages, 228 x 144mm.
Tempting a friend to join him on a lakeside holiday in southern Austria. 'I will just say that it would be very nice if you really came. But not to be selfish: do not expect anything from the modest Wörthersee! Something like the Starnbergersee, only much more practical for longer stays, also because of the beautiful surroundings'. The letter concludes with remarks about Frank's relationship with a girlfriend: 'if only you were still attached to my black-haired Mannheim girl!'.
Brahms's close friend Ernst Frank (1847-1889) was Kapellmeister at the Frankfurt Stadtheater. The Wörthersee with its distinctive blue-green waters is on the outskirts of Klagenfurt in Carinithia, southern Austria: after it was connected to the railway in 1863 it became an exclusive resort for the nobility and bourgeoisie of Vienna. Published in Johannes Brahms im Briefwechsel mit Ernst Frank (Neue Folge), ed. Robert Münster, 1995, Vol. XIX, No. 55.
