JONSTON, John (1603-1675) - Historiae naturalis de avibus. Frankfurt: Matthaeus Merian, 1650. First edition of the sole part dedicated to birds of this famous compendium of the animal kingdom which was considered the standard zoological encyclopedia of its era, combining works on quadrupeds, birds, insects, aquatic life, and reptiles. Folio (339 x 206mm). Engraved title incorporating printer's device, 62 numbered engraved plates, woodcut initials and headpieces, with priviledge on final leaf (light browning and spotting, two tiny wormholes to top margin, L2-L4 with small repair at top corner). Contemporary calf, gilt spine (weak joints, some rubbings and chipping, corners bumped).
