Lot 656 | Joseph Uphues (Sassenberg 1850 - Berlin 1911). An Archer.
Late 19th cent. Bronze, brown-green patinated. Figure: H. 37 cm, stone plinth: H. 2 cm. Sign. J. Uphues, foundry mark Akt. Ges. Gladenbeck Berlin. Patina slightly rubbed. The sculptor created the antique-inspired subject of the archer in 1884 and was awarded the gold medal in Melbourne in 1889. Six examples of the statuette are known in different versions, and the Gladenbeck bronze foundry offered them in various sizes - German sculptor. As a master student of Reinhold Begas, Uphues was an esteemed monument sculptor of the Wilhelminian era. From 1892 he had his own studio in Berlin and became a member of the Berlin Secession.
