Post lot text JUSTUS VAN EGMONT, PRESUMED PORTRAIT OF FRANÇOISE-MARGUERITE DE SÉVIGNÉ, COMTESSE DE GRIGNAN (1646-1705), HALF-LENGTH, OIL ON CANVASHaving trained in the workshop of Kaspar Van den Hoecke (1585-1648), Juste van Egmont (1601-1674) then joined the workshop of Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) from 1625 to 1628, during which time he collaborated on the production of the decoration of the Luxembourg Palace depicting the life of Marie de Medici (1575-1542), now in the Louvre. The artist moved to Paris in 1628, where he participated in the establishment of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1648 with, among others, Charles Le Brun (1619-1690), Philippe de Champaigne (1602-1674) and François Perrier (1590-1650). It was during his stay in Paris that he acquired a certain reputation as a portraitist of the French and European aristocracy. His illustrious models include Louis XIV (1638-1715), whose portrait is now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna (inv. 3208), and Marie-Louise Gonzague de Nevers (1611-1667) (Warsaw, National Museum, inv. M. Ob.568). Our portrait testifies to Rubens' influence on the work of Justus van Egmont through the vivid, almost sketchy treatment of the skin tones and fabrics.
