Blick auf Partenit(e) auf der Krim
Sehr fein gemalte, romantische Ideal-Landschaft. Der Betrachter schaut von einer Anhöhe mit Schafhirten in der Kleidung von Krim-Tataren und ihrer Herde über dicht bewaldete Hänge auf die Bucht von Partenit(e). Der bedeutende Landschaftsmaler Karl von Kügelgen und sein Zwillingsbruder, der Porträt- und Historienmaler Gerhard von Kügeln (1772 - 1820), waren Söhne des kurkölnischen Hofkammerrats Franz Anton Kügelgen (1727 - 1788), konnten sich jedoch erst nach dem Tod des Vaters der von ihm zuvor verbotenen Kunstleidenschaft zuwenden. Seit 1791 hielt sich Karl von Kügelgen mit einem kurfürstlichen Stipendium in Rom auf, doch musste er 1796 wegen der Napoleonischen Kriege über Wien nach Berlin gehen. 1798 folgte Karl von Kügelgen seinem Bruder nach St. Petersburg, wo ihn Zar Paul I. (1754 - 1801) zum hochdotierten Hofmaler berief. 1804 wurde Karl von Kügelgen zum ordentlichen Mitglied der Berliner Akademie der Künste ernannt, nachdem ihn kurz zuvor auch die St. Petersburger Akademie aufgenommen hatte. In den Jahren 1804 und 1806 bereiste Karl von Kügelgen im Auftrag des neuen Zaren Alexander I. (1777 - 1825) die Halbinsel Krim. Während dieser Reisen fertigte Kügelgen circa 400 (nach anderen Schätzungen 200) Skizzen an, nach denen er dann später fast gleich viele, bildmäßige, sorgfältig ausgeführte Sepia-Bilder schuf, wovon sich 40 Blätter in der Eremitage in St. Petersburg erhalten haben. Diese vom Künstler eigenhändig montierten und bezeichneten, leicht und luftig wirkenden Bilder, sollten dem Zaren einen Eindruck von der dortigen malerischen, südlichen Landschaft geben. Überdies führte Kügelgen nach den Krim-Sepien 30 Landschaftsbilder für einen der Sommerpaläste Alexanders aus. Zu den Sepiabildern der Krim gehörte auch die Ansicht "Partenite", welche die Vorlage des vorliegenden Bildes ist und durch die Staffage im Vordergrund ergänzt wurde. Karl von Kügelgen widmete sich außer der Malerei auch der noch relativ neuen Lithographie und schaffte auf diesem Gebiet seit 1819 beachtliche Arbeiten. 1827 veröffentlichte er 16 der Krim-Zeichnungen unter dem Titel "Vues pittoresques de la Crimei". Darunter befand sich auch das vorliegende Blatt mit dem Blick auf Partenit(e), "das Kügelgeln so übermalte, das der grafische Bildgrund nicht zu erkennen ist. Nach der Veröffentlichung der Krim-Lithographien würde ich das Bild 'um 1827' datieren. Ein weiteres Bild von Kügelgen in dieser Technik ist bisher nicht bekannt" (Zit.
