Abschied Napoleons aus Fontainebleau
Der heute vor allem als Genremaler bekannte schwäbische Künstler hat sich in einer Reihe von circa 50 Werken überdies intensiv mit Militär-, Schlachten- und Historienbildern befasst - der folgenreichen, nur wenig zurückliegenden napoleonischen Epoche mit den Koalitionskriegen und den Napoleonischen Kriegen von 1792 bis 1815. Meist hat Pflug hierbei französische Niederlagen dargestellt, mehrfach schilderte er Napoleon als Feldherrn vor der von ihm verlorenen Schlacht von Aspern (1809), die dessen Unbesiegbarkeit in Frage stellte. In diesem Zusammenhang steht auch das vorliegende, in fein lasierender Malweise ausgeführte Gemälde, das in seiner Komposition, dem Kolorit und in der Vielfigurigkeit ein charakteristisches, repräsentatives Beispiel für die militärischen Bilder Pflugs ist. Zugleich ist es sicherlich auch als persönlicher Ausdruck Pflugs und der weitverbreiteten antifranzösischen Haltung seiner Zeit zu interpretieren, da Napoleon hier an einem Tiefpunkt dargestellt ist: als Napoleon nach seinem Sturz abdanken musste und bevor er in die Verbannung nach Elba geschickt wurde, gab er am 20. April 1814 seinen Abschied von der "Vieille Garde" im Hof des Schlosses Fontainebleau bekannt und hielt eine Rede an die kaiserliche Garde, die ihm treu gebliebenen Offiziere, Unteroffiziere und Soldaten. Im Aufbau hat sich Pflug an dem berühmten Gemälde des französischen Militär- und Historienmalers Horace Vernet (1789-1863) orientiert, das heute nur noch in einer Kopie aus dem Jahr 1825 im Schloss Versailles überliefert ist. In zwei wesentlichen Details hat Pflug die Komposition Vernets jedoch in freier Form abgewandelt: am rechten Bildrand stellte sich Pflug selbst als Trommler in nachdenklich sinnierender Pose dar; auf der linken Bildseite steht ein hochgewachsener, älterer Soldat, der in der hochgestreckten Hand eine Bärenfellmütze zum Abschiedsgruß hält. Beide tragen französische Grenadier-Uniformen der alten kaiserlichen Garde und die zugehörigen goldenen Ohrringe, doch hat er deren Bärenfellmützen auf der Oberseite durch ein weißes Kreuz auf rotem Grund modifiziert, dessen Deutung bisher nicht eindeutig geklärt werden konnte. Pflug erhielt seine künstlerische Ausbildung 1806-1809 an der Münchener Akademie, 1810 erhielt eine Stelle als Zeichenlehrer in Biberach und unterrichtete während der folgenden 45 Jahre seiner Dienstzeit zahlreiche später erfolgreiche Maler wie Anton Braith.
