Um 1929. Öl/Lw. 78,5 x 100,5 cm. Verso bez. Karl Kluth Nachlass. Min. rest. Wie auch andere Mitglieder der Hamburgischen Sezession setzte Kluth sich in diesem Hauptwerk der späten 20er-Jahre mit dem Verhältnis von Linie, Fläche und Farbe auseinander. Die Künstler untersuchten das hierarchische Verhältnis dieser Elemente oder versuchten, sie im Bild zu einer gleichberechtigten Wirkung kommen zu lassen. Typisch hierfür sind teilweise wenig binnenmodellierte blockhafte Farbflächen, wie hier im Kleid der Schauspielerin, und vor allem die charakteristischen Umrisslinien. Diese sind häufig markant und farbig und nur lose an die Formen gebunden wie an der rechten Hand von Anneliese Born oder erweitern sich zu kleinen Flächen wie im Gesicht. Dadurch ergänzt ein Hell-Dunkel-Kontrast die starke Wirkung von Rot und Grün und steigert nochmals die Dynamik und Dramatik des ohnehin theatralischen Motivs der knienden Frau. - Anneliese Born trat 1929-35 auf der Bühne des Thalia-Theaters und der Kammerspiele in Hamburg auf. - K. ist einer der herausragenden Hamburger Maler der Moderne. K. studierte an der Karlsruher Akademie bei A. Haueisen, anschließend als Meisterschüler bei A. Babberger. Zurück in Hamburg wurde er 1928/29 mit dem ersten Lichtwark-Preis ausgezeichnet. E. Munch war im Frühwerk das prägende Vorbild für K. Ende der 20er Jahre und Anfang der 30er Jahre besuchte er den Meister in Olso und führte einige Arbeiten gemeinsam mit ihm aus. K. nahm 1951 eine Professur an der Hochschule für Bildende Kunst in Hamburg an, wo er u.a. Maler der Gruppe 'Zebra' unterrichtete. Unter seinen Auszeichnungen war 1957 der Edwin-Scharff-Preis der Stadt Hamburg, zudem war er als Ehrengast der Villa Massimo in Rom. Er blieb künstlerisch nie beim einmal Erreichten stehen, bis ins hohe Alter setzte er neue Ideen um. Mus.: Hamburg (Kunsthalle, Altonaer Mus., Mus. für Kunst u.
