1924. Aquarell und Tusche. 50 x 64,5 cm. Unter Glas gerahmt. Rechts unten signiert und datiert SRottluff 1924. Professionell restauriert. Schmidt-Rottluff verbrachte zwischen 1920 und 1931 die Sommer regelmäßig in Jershöft in Hinterpommern, und von dort stammt auch das Motiv dieses Blattes. Das Verhältnis von Mensch und Natur beschäftigte den Künstler in dieser Zeit immer wieder. Wohl wenige Berufe sind der Gewalt der Natur so unmittelbar ausgeliefert wie Fischer. Einer von ihnen zeigt ein für die deutschen Expressionisten so typisches an afrikanische Masken erinnerndes Gesicht, was ihm zusammen mit den breiten Schultern etwas Archetypisches verleiht. Kräftige Primärfarben verstärken den Eindruck des Urtümlichen und Unverfälschten. Erst auf den zweiten Blick stellt sich das Meer als der eigentlich Protagonist, die wirkliche Macht vor. In Farbabstufungen von lieblichem Hellblau bis zu bedrohlichem Schwarz überwölbt es das Zentrum des Bildes, und die überzeichnete Krümmung des Horizonts lässt den Gedanken an eine mächtige Welle zu. - Gutachten: Karl und Emy Schmidt-Rottluff-Stiftung, 26.10.2019 - Ausstellungen: Das Blatt war ausgestellt: Städtisches Kunstmuseum Duisburg 1955, Kat.-Nr. 68; Schloss Charlottenburg Berlin, 1954, Kat.-Nr. 125 - Provenienz: Hamburger Privatsammlung, seit den 1950ern in Familienbesitz - S.-R. ist einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter expressionistischer Kunst. Er studierte ab 1905 Architektur in Dresden und gehörte dort neben Kirchner, Heckel und Bleyl zu den Mitbegründern der 'Brücke', deren Stil für den deutschen Expressionismus prägend werden sollte. 1911 siedelte er nach Berlin über und beteiligte sich an Ausstellungen der Neuen Secession Berlin, des Blauen Reiters und des Kölner Sonderbunds, nach dem Krieg stellte er auch auf der Documenta aus. Zahlreiche seiner Arbeiten wurden von den Nationalsozialisten als 'entartet' beschlagnahmt und manche davon vernichtet. 1946 wurde er Professor in Berlin, wo 1964 auf seine Initiative das Brücke-Museum gegründet wurde.
