KLEEMANN, Christian Friedrich Karl (1735-1789) and Christian SCHWARZ (fl.1792-1793)

Beyträge zur Natur- und Insecten-Geschichte... als ein Anhang zu den Roeselischen Insecten-Belustigungen. Nürnberg: Raspe, 1792-1793.

Remarkable entomological work depicting and detailing the insect world. This work was published as a supplement to August Johann Roesel’s ie monatlich-herausgegeben Insecten-Belustigung. Erster (1740-1761). Due to his poor state of health, Rossel was unable to continue his series. As such, his work was continued by his son-in-law Christian Friedrich Carl Kleeman with the help of his daughter Catharina Barbara Kleemann. A 2nd edition, as well as the 6th part and the nomenclature for the work only appeared after Kleemann's death under Christian Schwarz. Most of the descriptions deal with butterflies; however, in addition to insects, other invertebrates such as crabs, spiders, mollusks and polyps are also depicted. Bodenheimer writes in Materialien zur Geschichte der Entymologie, that there has probably never been an entomologist who put down one of the volumes without delight and instruction ('Es hat wohl noch nie ein Entomologe einen der Bände ohne Entzücken und Belehrung aus den Händen gelegt, quoted from Junk, Rara'). Engelmann I, 504; Hagen I, 420; Nissen ZBI 2201.

Two volumes in one, quarto (205 x 169mm). Engraved portrait, two title-pages and 73 hand-coloured engraved plates, vol. I with 48 and vol. II with 25, and 9 engraved vignettes within letterpress (occasional light spotting). Contemporary brown tree calf, covers bordered in blind, spine ornately decorated in gilt with floral motifs and with two light brown calf labels lettered in gilt, edges stained red (extremities rubbed, chip to lower cover). Provenance: Graf zu Eulenburg (1838-1921, younger brother of Count Botho zu Eulenburg, who served as Minister-President of Prussia from 1892 to 1894; bookplate).
