Lot 162 | KNOOP, Johann Hermann (1700-1769)
Estimate value
£ 1 000 – 1 500
KNOOP, Johann Hermann (1700-1769)

Pomologia [-Fructologia; -Dendrologia]. Leeuwarden: Abraham Ferwerda and G. Tresling, [n.d., 1763?].

Second edition of this attractive book by the court gardener at Marienberg. The title-page emphasises how true to life the engravings are ('Naar het Leven geteikent, en met de Natuurlyke Coleuren afgezet'), and the 39 plates of apples, pears, plums, peaches, cherries, nuts and grapes undoubtedly achieve a striking degree of naturalism for the period. 'Most sets lack this final section on the contents of the kitchen garden' (Raphael). Not published until 1769, the final volume is unillustrated. Cf. Dunthorne 171 (excluding Dendrologia); cf. A Cleveland Herbal 465 (Fructologia only); cf. Nissen BBI 1077 (Fructologia, 1763), 1078 (Pomologia, 1758); Stafleu TL2 3766 ['possibly 1763'], 3767, 3768.

3 parts in one volume, folio (325 x 200mm). 39 hand-coloured folding engraved plates of apples, pears, and other fruit and berries [20+19] (lower corner of leaf H in the second work torn without loss of text). Contemporary half calf, speckled paper boards, spine in compartments gilt (upper joint starting, rather rubbed).
