Coach clock: museum coach clock with self strike, Markwick Markham around 1790
Ca. Ø78mm, ca. 366g, small coach clock with triple case, outer case covered with snake skin, middle case also, the middle case is decorated with an oval enamel plaque, top quality painting, framed by large Oriental pearls, 3rd case leton, open-worked, typical weapon decoration, 2 winding openings for 2 barrels, bell, Ottoman signed verge escapement with hour self strike on bell, very beautiful pillars, very beautifully preserved original enamel dial with Ottoman numerals, probably original hands, in excellent condition, in working order, only one hinge has been replaced. Markwick-Markham was founded by James Markwick Jr. and his son-in-law Robert Markham. Markwick-Markham became famous for its watches, which were destined for the Turkish market. Markham himself and his successors began to associate the names of other watchmakers with their goods destined for the Eastern market towards the end of the century. The watchmakers in question were Francis Perigal, Peter Upjohn, H. Story, Henry Borrell, John Johnson, Louis Recordon and others. A video for this lot is available on our website.
