Lot 4173 | Pocket watch: rarity, gold Oignon with repeater, royal watchm…
Pocket watch: rarity, gold Oignon with repeater, royal watchmaker Gaudron ca. 1710
Ca. Ø56mm, approx. 192g, 18K gold case with high relief, mythological scene, signed verge movement with mock pendulum and quarter repeater, excellent quality with engraved barrel, steep and high fusee, exceptional pillars, excellently preserved dial with enamel cartouches, iron hands, in working order, repeater strikes loud and clear but needs adjustment. Pierre Gaudron is considered an outstanding watchmaker, he was the son of Antoine Gaudron (I) and brother of Antoine Gaudron (II). He was active in Paris between 1690 and 1730, making watches on behalf of the government. Gaudron was Court Watchmaker to the Duc d'Orleans and the King of France. Gold oignons are absolute rarities. As far as we know, only 5 are known, 2 of them in the Patek Philippe Museum and 1 watch in the Louvre. The 4th example was sold at our auction and is in a private collection.
