Lot 2174 | Laborde,(L.E.S.J.).
Brunet III.714. - With lithographed title with vignette of the ruins of Palmyra and Sardes after Laborde, 2 historiated woodcut initials within borders by Fragonard, more then 240 tinted lithographed subjects on 110 plates (instead of 167 plates), by Letronne and Freeman after Laborde, Champmartin, Deroy and others, a few printed in additional colours. - Rare work of his travels through Syria, the Holy Land and the Levant. The parts for this work were issued together with the companion work Voyage de l'Asie Mineure under the general title Voyage en Orient from 1838, and according to the British Library, part 39 had been completed by 1845. Brunet, however, states that only 36 had been issued by 1861. The complications of the issue of the two works together meant that subscribers were presumably supposed to divide the parts into the relevant works, and subsequently, complete copies of both works are very rare. - Etw. gebräunt, teilweise leicht wasserrandig. Mehrere Taf. etwas stärker stockfleckig - Ex. aus aus der Sammlung "Friedrich August II., Sachsen, König". Exlibris des Wappens mit Krone u. Umschrift "zur K.F. Sammlung F.A.II." auf Titelseite verso. - 2 parts in 1 volume. Contemporary half calf, partly scratched and bumped. Browned, partly slightly waterstained, few plates heavier foxing.
