LE PIN

Le Pin is one of the most collectable wines in the world. Production is about 600 or 700 cases per year, and this combination of rarity and the superbly-concentrated, rich and powerful wines results in exceptional prices at auction. The name, Le Pin, comes from a solitary Pine tree that grows near the winemaking facility. 1979 was the first vintage.

The vineyard was purchased from Mme. Loubie in 1979 by Jacques Thienpont, his father and uncle. With time Jacques has become the sole owner. The property was extended with the purchase of a small plot of adjacent land in 1984. The south-facing vineyard is located on the Pomerol plateau. The soil which is very well drained is composed of gravel, some sand and clay on an iron-rich base. Yields are kept low at around 30 hectolitres per hectare. The grapes are hand-harvested and are fermented in stainless steel before being matured in new oak barriques for between 14 and 18 months and bottled without filtration. Famous, blockbuster vintages such as 1989, 2000, 2005, 2009 and 2010 are joyous wines.
