First edition and first issue of the French version by F. Beroalde Verville (1556-1626) of the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili. The second edition, more commonly found on the market, has the coat of arms of Louis XIII at *2r (datable after 1610) and does not have the privilege that is present here at 5*3v. The work highlights the alchemical aspects of the celebrated Hypnerotomachia and the woodcuts are reused from Kerver's edition of 1546 and show some wear.

Fine title within an elaborate woodcut border, woodcut initials and headpieces, numerous illustrations in text, many full-page, with final blank at the end of the preface (browned and with some foxing). Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on spine (some staining and damaged spine).
