Leaf from the Obituary Book of the Church of St Evodius, Le Puy, in Latin, manuscript on vellum [Southern France, Le Puy, 2nd half 13th century].
A rare type of manuscript, listing the names of the people who should be remembered, and recording their gifts and bequests to the church.
c.320 × 245mm, a nearly complete leaf, with several lines allowed for each day from XV kalends to VIII kalends of an unspecified month (two days have no entries) recording the names and gifts of those who are to be remembered on each day, by several 13th-century scribes (recovered from use as a book-cover, with typical creases and darkening of the outside face, not significantly affecting legibility).
Provenance:
(1) Several entries indicate an origin at the church of St Evodius, Le Puy (roughly halfway between Montpellier and Clermont-Ferrand) e.g. ‘Obiit R. Richardi canonicus Aniciensis [Le Puy] qui legavit Ecclesie Sancti Evodii [...]’ and ‘Et eodem die obiit Willelmus de Chaptolio [Chapteuil, a few miles east of Le Puy] clericus, qui dimisit clericis Aniciensis & .xii. monachi Sancti Petri [St-Pierre de la Tour]. Panem et vinum in territorio de Copchae’; many other gifts include bread and wine.
(2) Erik von Scherling (d. 1956), Leiden bookseller: offered in his Rotulus 5 (1949), no. 2088.
(3) Colker MS 122; given to him by his wife; acquired in 1967 from Maggs.
