Further details
LEONAERT BRAMER, FIGURES DESCENDING A HILL TOWARDS A FALLEN FIGURE, WATERCOLOUR
Towards the end of his career, the Delft painter and draughtsman started producing extensive series of coloured works, some on vellum, others (as here) on paper (M.C. Plomp, ‘Leonaert Bramer the Draughtsman’, in Leonaert Bramer 1596-1674. Ingenious Painter and Draughtsman in Rome and Delft, exhib. cat., Delft, Stedelijk Museum het Prinsenhof, 1994, pp. 195-196). Subjects include the Life of Christ (ibid., no. 40, ill.), Ovid’s Metamorphoses (ibid., nos. 41, 42, ill.), and the unidentified subject of the present sheet, perhaps taken from ancient history. The drawing may have belonged to the same series as four of similar size and settings, recently acquired by the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin, inv. KdZ 30269-30270 (H. Bevers, Niederländische Zeichnungen und Druckgraphik der Sammlung Christoph Müller im Berliner Kupferstichkabinett, exhib. cat., Berlin, Kupferstichkabinett, Staatliche Muséen zu Berlin, Kulturforum, 2008, no. 18a-18d, afb.).
