A rare appointment of an officer in the Marine Corps, namely “John C. Harris” as a “Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps from 26th November 1861”. The Marine Corps during the civil war consisted of approximately 2,400 men of which only 51 were commissioned officers, many less than the U.S. Navy at the time, and far less than the personnel comprising the Union Army during the Civil War.
