First edition of Lister's first book. The four parts cover spiders, land snails, freshwater and salt water mollusks, and fossil shells. BMNH III, 1155; Freeman British Natural History Books 2289; Keynes Lister 1; Nissen ZBI 2527; Wing L2523 and L2514C.



Small quarto (193 x 153mm). Imprimatur leaf, 9 folding engraved plates, errata leaf (page numbers for pp.29-30 defective due to printing flaw, R2 with insignificant marginal chip, tiny marginal worming foot of gutter from gathering Q onwards just affecting a couple of letters). Contemporary calf (rebacked, corners repaired, extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: George Thackeray (engraved armorial bookplate) — Sidney F. Harmer (1862-1950; zoologist) — Richard B. Freeman (1915-1986; zoologist, historian of natural history and bibliographer of Darwin; neat pencil notes in his hand on front pastedown).
