Historia insectorum ... Cui subjungitur Appendix de scarabæis britannicis, autore M. Lister. London: A. and J. Churchill, 1710.

The Macclesfield copy of John Ray's posthumously published work on insects. Ray's importance as a naturalist lies with his pre-Linnaean attempts at classification of the natural world. This work contains a supplement by Ray's friend, Martin Lister, who is recognised for his pioneering work on arachnology. Keynes, Lister 34; Keynes, Ray 104.

Quarto (223 x 165mm). (Variable browning and spotting throughout). Contemporary sprinkled calf, gilt spine (extremities rubbed, spine chipped at head). Provenance: Earls of Macclesfield (armorial bookplate and small blindstamp to title; sold Sotheby's 16 March 2004, lot 82).
