Estimate value
$ 3 000 – 5 000
Inscribed from Milne to H.G. Wells, 1905
MILNE, A.A. (1882-1956). Lovers in London. London: Alston Rivers, 1905.
Presentation copy of Milne’s first book, inscribed for H.G. Wells on the front free endpaper: “To a great author from a very little one” and with Wells's bookplate. This is a wonderful association linking two great fantasists of the World War One era. Wells taught from 1889-1890 at Henley House, the school run by Milne's father and where Milne himself was a student. It was Wells's suggestion that Milne develop some of the sketches he had been working on into this novel (see Tori Haring-Smith's biography, 1982). There is additionally an autograph letter signed from Milne to Mr. M.D. Hurley of Los Angeles describing the scarcity of this edition laid in, 29 October 1936, in part: "In as far as any of my books have collectors' value, this should be the most valuable, for it is certainly (and luckily) very scarce."
Octavo. Half-title. Original green cloth lettered in red (chip to lower joint and to head of spine, endpapers toned and offset to facing pages). Custom chemise and quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance: H.G. Wells, science fiction author, 1866-1946 (bookplate; inscription).
