Lot 116 | LUDOLPHUS DE SAXONIA (c.1300-1378)
Estimate value
£ 5 000 – 8 000
Vita Christi, in Dutch: Tboeck vanden leven Jhesu Christi. Delft: [Christiaen Snellaert], 22 May 1488.
Second edition in Dutch of a wildly popular life of Christ, extensively illustrated, and the first book printed by Snellaert at the second Delft printing shop. The first edition, in Latin, appeared in 1474 and was quickly reprinted and translated; editions in German, Dutch, French, Catalan and Portuguese appeared by the end of the 15th century. Printing at Delft in the 15th century was carried out at what was essentially a single shop, managed by a succession of printers. This edition was the work of its second master, Christian Snellaert, who took over Jacob Jacobszoon van der Meer's shop, including his type-material. While some of the woodcuts used here had appeared in earlier van der Meer publication, many were newly cut for this edition. All Snellaert editions are rare on the market; only a fragment of his Dutch Vita Christi appears in auction records and almost half of the surviving copies listed in ISTC are imperfect. Goff L-354; C 3672; Camp 1182; ILC 1504; CIBN L-279. BSB-Ink L-267; Bod-inc. L-189; ISTC il00354000.
Chancery folio (284 x 204mm). 302 leaves (of 304, lacking q6 and aa4). Woodcuts, some touched with colour, opening initial in red and blue with penwork decoration, other initials, paragraph marks and capital strokes in red (first few leaves somewhat soiled and repaired at margin, 4 lvs with repaired tear into text without loss, occasional marginal repair, occasional light stain or soiling). Contemporary blindstamped calf over wooden boards, preserved at end are early flyleaves with inscriptions and 2 partial bifolia on vellum from the Auctoritates Aristotelis, a 13th-century Florilegium compiled by Marsilius of Padua [Germany, late 13th century] (worn and restored, new spine, bosses and clasps). Provenance: early and later annotations, 2 chapters with extensive notes for a sermon in a ?17c hand – Petrus Roymans, 1777 (inscription on g4) – various names on end flyleaves: Petrus Mart[e?] 1662; Petrus Etroe; Leonardt De Schares, son of Henricus Scharenus; P. Henckens Tot Wanshun (?), 14 September 1806; Hendrica van der Fouart, 1806.
