LUNAR PHOTOGRAPHY – Five original photographs of the Moon at different phases, from observatories in France, Australia and Russia, 1870s-1890s.

1. WEINEK, Laszlo (1848-1913). Captioned in manuscript, “Directe Copie nach dem Negative von Loewy u. Puiseux vom 14. März 1894, 6h33m57s M. Z. Paris, L. Weinek, fec.,” manuscript caption. 179 x 129mm photograph on 267 x 207mm mount with stamp of K.K. Sternwarte, Prague. Weinek directed the German University Observatory in Prague and is chiefly remembered for his extensive drawings and photographs of lunar topography.

2. ELLERY, [Robert L.J.] (1827-1908). “The Moon, from a photograph taken with the great Melbourne Reflector by Mr. Ellery, F.R.S.,” printed caption on verso of mount. 150 x 122mm photograph on 290 x 228mm mount, seller’s ticket of John Browning, London. The Great Melbourne Telescope was the first large reflecting telescope in the Southern Hemisphere. These albumen print photographs of the Moon from the 1870s were considered the best of the era.

3. Anonymous photograph of the full Moon. 166 x 162mm photograph on 270 x 211mm mount.

4. HANSKY, Aleksey Pavlovich (1870-1908) and KOTINSKY, Sergei (1867-1938). Pair of photographs of the Moon, waxing gibbous, “Lumiére cendrée de la Lune photographiée par S. Kotinsky et A. Hansky au mois de septembre 1896 à Poulkowo," manuscript caption. 120 x 130mm each, mounted on inside form of card bifolium, 248 x 198mm. The Pulkovo Observatory is outside St. Petersburg.

Together, five photographs. Scattered light wear, overall very good.
