PIER FRANCESCO (DI JACOPO) FOSCHI (ALSO TOSCHI) (ZUGESCHRIEBEN) 2nd November 1502 Florenz - 17th September 1567 Ibid MADONNA WITH THE CHILD AND SAINT JOHN Oil on massive poplar panel (two horizontally inserted big back side sponki). 101 x 75 cm (F. 142 x 117 cm). Verso: On the panel with old inventory or auction numer '655-C''. Furthermore with an old paper label with handwritten text. Part. min. old restored, very good painting largely free of old restoration. Very elaborate hand-carved florentine framing. The painting offered here by Pier Francesco Foschi is similar in composition to a painting by Andrea del Sarto, which was formerly in the collection of the Palazzo Pittis in Florence and is now lost. However, a significant difference can be seen in the massive manneristic overlength of the Madonna figure, which in its expression, the soft and delicate execution of the incarnation and its graceful elegance is more reminiscent of Jacopo da Pontormo's work. Foschi was apprenticed to Andrea del Sarto as a student. In 1536 he assisted Pontormo in colouring of the frescoes for the Villa Medici by Careggi in Florence.
