SCHOOL OF BRESCIA Master, active about 1610/20. PORTRAIT OF A CONDOTTIERO FROM THE GAMBARA FAMILY HOLDING A GENERAL BATON Oil on canvas. 104 x 84 cm (F. 133,5 x 113 cm). Part. min. damaged, sligthly old restored. Italian hand carved frame of the (probably) 17th century. In the classical pyramidal composition, showing the condottiero with his general's baton, his helmet can be seen on the left, showing a small coat of arms with three crayfish. This very rare motif suggests that the sitter is a member of the Gambara family (crayfish = Gambero in Italian), who carry such an animal in their family crest. The Gambara family lived in Brescia and fought against the Venetian occupation of their city, especially in the 16th and 17th centuries. Besetzung ihrer Stadt. Provenance: Private Collection Berlin.
