Lot 3364 | Manfred Freiherr von Richthofen (1892 - 1918) - persönliches Petschaft des legendären Jagdfliegers
Estimate value
€ 3 500
Manfred Freiherr von Richthofen (1892 - 1918) - a personal seal of the legendary fighter pilot
Bronze, made of two parts. The handle in the shape of Icarus with outstretched wings. The round, detachable base with engraved seal matrix featuring the coat of arms of the von Richthofen family. Overall height 10.2 cm, wingspan 7.8 cm. With two modern seal impressions.
In a certain way, Icarus and von Richthofen shared the same fate: The German aviator didn't fly too close to the sun, but on the day of his death he ventured too far behind British lines, his boldness presumably caused by a projectile that hit his head on 6 July 1917, leading to a frontal lobe injury which probably made him relentlessly pursue his target, Canadian Lieutenant Wilfrid May, on 21 April 1918 before being fatally wounded by Australian machine gunners.
Provenance: ZAM- Zentrum für Außergewöhnliche Museen (Centre for Exceptional Museums), Munich. Displayed under inventory no. 20 in the special exhibition "Das Siegel in meiner Hand - Petschaften bedeutender Persönlichkeiten des 18., 19. und des frühen 20. Jhdts." (tr. "The seal in my hand - seals belonging to significant personalities of the 18th, 19th and early 20th century") from 23 July to 15 November 2001. With the former exhibition card and a copy of the press release for the exhibition, written by the director of the museum at the time.
