Lot 179 | Marc Chagall (1887-1985)
Marc Chagall (1887-1985)

Psaumes de David. Geneva: Gérald Cramer, 1979.

Mint copy in the original publishers packaging, Psaumes de David lays bare Marc Chagall’s enduring artistic inspiration derived from the most poetic of religious narratives. After Chagall completed his illustrated Bible in 1956, his works became further saturated with religious iconography and symbolism. A particular favourite subject matter was the war warrior-musician-poet David, not only due to the figure's significance to the Jewish faith, but equally due to personal connection; Marc Chagall's brother, who had died of tuberculosis, shared the same name.

Quatro (289 x 515mm). Number 141 of 200 copies, printed on Arches wove paper, signed by the artist, thirty etchings with aquatint in black and light brown. Loose as issued, in the original paper wrappers and contained within cream cloth chemise, lettered in gilt on spine and cover, and matching slipcase; sold with the original cardboard box and outer wrapper. Provenance: Outer cardboard box numbered 141 by the publisher.

293 x 230 x 30 mm. (overall)
