Allee im Tiergarten mit Spaziergängern und Kutsche
Max Liebermann hat das Motiv des vorliegenden Gemäldes mehrfach wiederholt. Es ist zwar nicht datiert, doch stimmt die Komposition weitgehend mit seiner bekannten Radierung "Straße im Tiergarten" - aus dem Jahr 1922 überein: Unter dem lichten Laubdach der diagonal in die Tiefe führenden Allee sitzen rechts im Vordergrund Figuren auf einer Bank, die auf wandelnde Sonntagsspaziergänger schauen, darunter eine elegant gekleidete Dame mit kleinem Mädchen an der Hand. Währenddessen bringt eine, auf der Straße in Blickrichtung fahrende Kutsche, Dynamik und imaginäre Geräusche ins Bild. Im Entstehungsjahr des Gemäldes 1922 war Liebermann trotz seiner 75 Jahre malerisch immer noch sehr produktiv und eine aktive Persönlichkeit im pulsierenden Kunst- und Kulturleben Berlins. 1920 hatte er das Amt des Präsidenten der Berliner Akademie der Künste übernommen, die er reformierte und auch für neuere Strömungen wie den Expressionismus öffnete. Sowohl durch sein Alter als auch bedingt durch den Ausbruch des I. Weltkrieges musste er seit 1915 mit Sujets aus der Nähe seines Wohnortes in Berlin vorliebnehmen, nachdem er zuvor über Jahrzehnte hinweg seine Sommermonate regelmäßig in Holland an der Nordsee verbracht hatte. Die Allee im Großen Tiergarten wurde neben der Umgebung der eigenen Liebermann-Villa am Wannsee nun zu einem Hauptmotiv in Liebermanns Spätwerk. Er war von dem riesigen Park eingenommen, der nur wenige Schritte entfernt lag von seiner Wohnung im Stadtpalais am Pariser Platz neben dem Brandenburger Tor. Sein Vater hat das Haus schon 1857 gekauft und seit 1892 lebte Max Liebermann dort selbst mit seiner Familie. So war ihm der Tiergarten durchaus vertraut, bereits 1881-1885 hatte er dort mehrfach den Kinderspielplatz und die Kinderwärterinnen gemalt. In den Tiergarten-Bildern schilderte Liebermann das Licht- und Schattenspiel, belebt durch variierende Staffagefiguren und urbane Fahrzeuge wie Kutschen, Automobile und Straßenbahnen.
