"Badende IX". Originaltitel Handkolorierter Holzschnitt/Bütten, 1911. R. u. sign. u. dat. 1912. Wvz. Krüger H 104. Verlegt von Fritz Gurlitt, Berlin; durch die Nummerierung der einzelnen Holzschnitte erkennbar ursprünglich als Mappe geplant, aber nicht als solche herausgegeben. Überaus seltener, vom Künstler selbst handkolorierter Abzug des Holzschnitts. Laut Krüger gibt es "einzelne Handdrucke sowie die für Gurlitt hergestellte Auflage von 15 Drucken auf Japan und 8 handkolorierte auf Bütten". Die Handkolorierung erfolgte in Rot, Gelb, Blau und Grün oder wie beim vorliegenden Blatt in Rot, Gelb und Blau. In über 30 Jahren kam kein einziger Abzug der handkolorierten Auflage dieses Holzschnitts auf den Auktionsmarkt, zuletzt wurde 1992 ein unkoloriertes Exemplar bei Christie's in London versteigert (02.12.1992, Live auction 4890, Old Master & Modern Prints, Lot-Nr. 478). In Museumsbesitz lässt sich ein Abzug der handkolorierten Auflage nachweisen - im Kunstmuseum Ravensburg (aus der Expressionisten-Sammlung Selinka, mit gleicher Kolorierung). Der Holzschnitt "Badende IX" spiegelt in seiner harten, kantigen, stark flächigen Formensprache mit deutlicher Konturierung, abgesetzten schwarzen und weißen Flächen den Einfluss primitivistischer Objekte auf den "Brücke"-Künstler wider, insbesondere afrikanischer Naturvölker. Die Akte stehen und liegen in unterschiedlichen Posen am und im Meer, wobei die räumliche Einbindung nur an der horizontalen Staffelung erkennbar wird. Pechsteins intensive Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema von Badenden und Aktdarstellungen im Freien steht im Zusammenhang mit seinen Sommeraufenthalten an den Moritzburger Teichen mit Ernst Ludwig Kirchner und Erich Heckel 1910/11, überdies mit seinen Urlauben seit 1909 in Nidden auf der Kurischen Nehrung an der Ostsee. Diese setzte er 1910-1912 in eine Werkreihe von Gemälden und Grafiken um. In zwei Holzschnittfolgen befasste er sich 1911/12 mit dem Themenkreis - der Zyklus "Badende" entstand im Jahr 1911, die Folge "Sommer" folgte im Jahr danach. Wie die zugleich entstandenen Gemälde sind es erotisch-arkadische, geradezu paradiesische Momentaufnahmen, frei von gesellschaftlichen Konventionen und ein sinnlicher, radikaler, ästhetischer Affront gegen jegliche wilhelminische Sittsamkeit.
