Estimate value

MERRETT, Christopher (1614/15-1695)

Pinax Rerum Naturalium Britannicarum. London: Thomas Roycroft, 1667.

A scarce copy of the first British encyclopaedic work of flora, fauna and minerals. Christopher Merrett was a prominent English physician and scientist who composed a number of works on topics ranging from glass- and wine-making to natural history. Nearly all copies of the 1666 first edition were destroyed, likely in the Great Fire of London, which also consumed his lodgings at the Royal Society’s Harveian library. The second 1667 edition was printed in 2 impressions, this copy an example of the first (Freeman). BM (NH) III, 1291; Dawsons 4671; DSB IX, 312; Freeman, 2557; Graesse IV, 499.

Second edition. Octavo (151 x 92mm). (Minor marginal soiling to a few leaves at end.) Contemporary calf (rebacked and recornered, extremities lightly rubbed and with small chip to bottom right corner of upper board). Provenance: Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (old ink inscription on title, library stamp and manuscript classmarks on front pastedown and flyleaf with withdrawn stamps) — front free endpaper with large upper portion excised to remove previous ownership inscription.
