From the libraries of Lord Lilford and Prince Philippe, Count of Flanders: one of the last large-scale ornithological books of the 19th century with magnificent hand-coloured lithographic plates depicting the Capercaillie, the Black Grouse and various related hybrid species. Lilford is listed as a subscriber in the text volume. Anker 335 (‘The plates are lithographs coloured by hand (Druck v. C. Böhm, Berlin), executed from original water-colours by G. Mützel, who also drew the figures on stone. Owing to a lack of detail in Sotheby's Lilford Hall library auction catalogue of 1949, it is not possible to say whether this set with dual provenance was as owned by Lilford or subsequently put together. 2 volumes, comprising folio text (386 x 277mm), and elephant oblong folio atlas (480 x 660mm). Text: half-title, list of subscribers (scattered spotting throughout). Contemporary red quarter morocco over red cloth, spine lettered in gilt with Lord Lilford’s crowned monogram at foot, preserving original printed grey wrappers (some light soiling to verso of rear wrapper bound in, extremities lightly rubbed). Atlas: lithographic title printed in bistre and 17 hand-coloured lithographic plates by G. Mützel (occasional faint spotting confined to the extremities of the plates). Contemporary green morocco-backed cloth by J. Schavye of Brussels, spine lettered in gilt with gilt crowned monogram (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: Thomas Littleton Powys, 4th Baron Lilford (1833-1896, ornithologist; binding, sold Sotheby’s 4 July 1949, lot 648) – Prince Philippe of Belgium, Count of Flanders (1837-1905; crowned monogram on spine of atlas).
