A wide margined uncut copy of the first edition printed on strong paper of this rare and important work of Milanese history illustrated with engravings by Cagnoni based on the drawings by Torelli. This copy is from the library of Gian Francesco Galeani Napione, historian and scholar, promotor of a Piedmontese-led confederation of Italian states; his most important work was published in 1791, "Dell'uso e dei pregi della lingua italiana", one of the first manifestos of linguistic purism.
2 volumes, 4to (300 x 235mm). Title page with printer's device, folding city plan, genealogical table and 6 engraved plates of which 5 folding, woodcut initials and headpieces (some light marginal stainining). Contemporary editorial boards, uncut (first volume without spine and plates partially detached, losses to spine in second volume). Provenance: Gian Francesco Galeani Napione (1748-1830; ownership inscription on final leaf in second volume). (2)
