£ 1 000 – 1 500
First edition of the printed musical score, signed and inscribed to Judy Garland by lyricist Johnny Mercer. Inscribed in blue ballpoint pen on the front cover ‘For Judy, with my best wishes and appreciation! Johnny Mercer’.
Arlen and Mercer created what some consider to be their best score for the 1946 Broadway musical St Louis Woman. Around the same time, Mercer’s song On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe, with music by Harry Warren, was a smash for Judy Garland in the 1946 MGM musical The Harvey Girls and earned Mercer the first of his four Academy Awards for Best Song. Garland would go on to record her version of Come Rain or Come Shine for her 1956 album Judy, and the song also features on her legendary 1961 live album Judy at Carnegie Hall.
Printed piano-vocal score, 303 x 230 mm, original pictorial self wrappers, separated at the spine fold. Provenance: Hindman Auctions, Chicago, 14 June 2007, lot 293.
