Further details

NICOLÒ DELL' ABATE, FOUR PUTTI HOLDING TWO FLAGS AND A HELMET, BLACK AND WHITE CHALK, ON LIGHT BROWN PAPER
The drawing is a typical example of Nicolò dell' Abate's draftsmanship. Born in Modena, the artist worked first in his hometown and in Bologna as decorator for the local nobility; later on he moved to France where he was employed at the service of the Valois for twenty years, from 1552 to 1571, becoming one of the most important members of the first school of Fontainebleau.
Recent scholarly research has shed light on the evolution of dell’Abate’s graphic style from the early years in Italy to his time in France (see G. Brusori and M. Mouton, ‘Pour Nicolò dell’Abate dessinateur: évolutions et dialogues’, Nouvelles de l’estampe [online], 268, 15 November 2022).
The present sheet can be dated to the years immediately after the artist moved to France and was working for Henry II of Valois. The composition is probably a study for part of the decorations of the ballroom at Fontainebleau, executed between 1552 and 1556.
