NICOLAES BERCHEM, SHEPHERDS WITH THEIR FLOCK BY A RIVER, RED CHALK
Berchem’s evocations of the life of shepherds and shepherdesses in the Italian countryside, although not based on first-hand observation, are among the most admired works of any Dutch artist depicting the Southern landscape. This lively sketch in red chalk – possibly an idea for a painting – can be compared to a sheet in the Frits Lugt Collection, Paris, which has been dated to circa 1656-1657 (inv. 6479; see A. Stefes, ‘Nicolaes Berchem als tekenaar’ in Nicolaes Berchem. In het licht van Italië, exhib. cat., Haarlem, Frans Hals Museum, Zurich, Kunsthaus, and Schwerin, Staatliches Museum, 2006-2007, no. T60, ill; p. 108). A counterproof of the present sheet is in the Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo (inv. 8711; see H.T. Colenbrander and J.D. van der Waals, Tekeningen van de 16de tot de 19de eeuw. Rijksmuseum Kröller-Möller, Otterlo, 1981, no. 22). The watermark of that drawing, which has been dated around 1662, suggests the original presented here may also be of slightly later date, i.e. the early 1660s.
We are grateful to Annemarie Stefes for confirming the attribution of this drawing and for her help in writing this note.
