Contemporary hand-coloured engravings, among the finest and most influential illustrations of Turkish characters and costumes. Nicolay accompanied Gabriel d'Aramont, French diplomat and ambassador, on a mission to Constantinople in 1551. While there he wrote this account and sketched his remarkable figures of Ottomans, Arabs, Armenians, and islanders in costume. Brunet IV, 67; Adams, N-253. Colas II, 220.

Woodcut device on title, initials, and headpieces, 67 engravings of Turkish costumes all coloured by a contemporary hand, mis-paginated at pp. 50, 97, and 143-144 as issued (lacking final blank M8, some light offsetting, damp-staining and occasional spotting). Later vellum (extremities lightly rubbed, some light soiling, heavier to spine).
