Agate
China
Eastern Zhou, Warring States, 4. - 3. Century. before
DM. 4.7 CM
瑪瑙瑗。中國,東周代,戰國時期,公元前4-3世紀。直徑4.7厘米。維也納私人舊藏。

A precisely and very evenly ground Ring, in the space of four oblique, a fifth narrow and straight is in the middle on the inside. This perfectness of the work undoubtedly has measured their own special page at the time when this Ring is originated over 2000 years ago. This agate has a greenish jade color, a moving game with yellow-brown to dark brown shades, clouds, and small bands.

J. J. Lally (New York) has been published in “Chinese Archaic Jades and Bronzes” in no. 86 some of the examples from the same time, mainly from the collection of Max Loehr.

Notes by Prof. Salviati: Faceted rings in agate, such as the present one were common during the Eastern Zhou period and utilized to form an ornament made up of several jades strung together : they represent a novelty in the repertory of shapes and remained in use from the Spring and Autumn to the Western Han dynasty, reaching the peak of their popularity in the Warring States period. They have been found in several parts of China, but seem to have been particularly favoured in eastern Shandong province. The Agate rings are always characterized by faceted sides. Sackler (1913-1987) collections, sold at Christie's New York on 18 March 2009 (sale 2268), Lot 308: http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/three-agate-rings-and-a-white-jade-5181944-details.aspx a second one from the collection of R.
