DM. 4,7 CM
Notes by Prof. Salviati: Faceted rings in agate such as the present one were common during the Eastern Zhou period and utilized to form ornaments made up of several jades strung together : they represent a novelty in the repertory of shapes and remained in use from the Spring and Autumn to the Western Han dynasty, reaching the peak of their popularity in the Warring States period. They have been found in several parts of China but seem to have been particularly favoured in eastern Shandong province. Agate rings are always characterized by faceted sides. Comparable rings include some from the Arthur M. Sackler (1913-1987) collections, sold at Christie’s New York on 18 March 2009 (sale 2268), Lot 308: http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/three-agate-rings-and-a-white-jade-5181944-details.aspx; a second one from the collection of R. H. Ellsworth (1929-2014), auctioned at Christie’s New York on 19 March 2015 (sale 11420), Lot 581: http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/lot/two-agate-faceted-rings-china-late-warring-5876638-details.aspx?from=salesummery&intObjectID=5876638&sid=99a72b8d-24b2-40a7-a133-4f2f8791a87e; and two more from the collection of Max Loehr (1903-1988), offered at Sotheby’s Paris on 15 December 2016, sale PF1627, Lot 68: http://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2016/jades-archaiques-de-chine-pf1627/lot.68.html.
